The SonoScholar Story
What you will find here is a collection of academic and educational materials developed over more than forty years of work in diagnostic medical sonography—through clinical practice, classroom teaching, industry collaboration, research, writing, and countless conversations with practicing sonographers, educators, and students.
Throughout that journey, one need has remained constant: clear, accurate educational material written by a sonographer for sonographers. Too often, complex topics are either reduced to disconnected bullet points or presented at a level that makes them unnecessarily difficult to understand. My goal has always been to find the middle ground—to explain sophisticated physical principles, engineering concepts, hemodynamics, and clinical applications in language that is both rigorous and approachable.
SonoScholar Publishing grew from that goal. The resources available here include textbooks, white papers, teaching materials, illustrations, and other educational content in ultrasound physics and instrumentation, vascular and hemodynamic principles, obstetric and gynecologic sonography, and related areas of professional education. These materials have evolved over many years of learning, teaching, writing, revising, and listening to the people who use ultrasound every day. My hope is that they make difficult concepts easier to understand, more meaningful in clinical practice, and perhaps even enjoyable to learn.
Jim Baun is a sonographer, educator, author, and publisher whose career in diagnostic medical sonography has spanned more than four decades. His work has included clinical sonography across a broad range of specialties, including radiology, neonatology, vascular surgery, urology, maternal fetal medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology, as well as classroom and professional education, research, industry collaboration, and the development of educational resources for students and practicing professionals.
He has authored eight academic textbooks, contributed chapters to several additional textbooks, and published nearly 30 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, with a particular focus on the science of diagnostic ultrasound, imaging physics, and emerging technologies. His most recent books include Sonography: Acoustics to Images and Hemodynamics for Sonographers.
He has lectured extensively throughout the United States and internationally on ultrasound physics, instrumentation, vascular sonography, and emerging imaging technologies. SonoScholar Publishing brings together educational materials developed throughout that career, with an emphasis on making complex sonographic principles clear, clinically relevant, and accessible to the professionals who use them.
